What happens if the meter is not read?

If the meter cannot be read as a result of partial or complete inaccessibility (i.e. the meter is in a location which requires client intervention or that of a person who can grant access to the place in which the meter is installed), the distributor leaves a special notice inviting the client to contact his or her retailer for a self-reading.
If reading fails on two successive attempts and the distributor has no available self-reading, the distributor must try again in the month after their second attempt and consider a different time frame after the second failed attempt.

In any event, in the absence of a reading or a valid client self-reading, distributors will estimate consumption to retailers on the basis of all available previous readings and self-readings and standard consumption profiles (i.e. consumption curves based on seasonal and client type factors).
Retailers must also notify clients of the reasons for the failure to read the meter. This will occur on the first useful bill (protected categories) or using the methods shown in the contract (free market).
